Vintage Italian Modern Travertine Coffee Tables with Bullnose Edge, 1980s

An exceptional example of Italian mid-century modern design, this vintage 1980s travertine coffee table pairs the visual weight of natural stone with beautifully softened detailing. Its broad rectangular top rests on a substantial pedestal base, creating a strong, grounded silhouette characteristic of Italian stone furniture from the period.

The travertine is particularly attractive, displaying a light ivory and cream palette with long, linear grain running across the surface. Naturally occurring veining, mineral deposits, tonal variation, and porous formations reveal the stone's geological character and ensure the table is entirely unique. Rather than concealing these variations, the design celebrates them as an integral part of the design.

A finely carved ogee profile transitions into a rounded bullnose edge, giving the substantial top a more sculptural appearance. The pedestal echoes this design with softly rounded vertical edges, while the direction of the travertine grain emphasizes the solidity of the base.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Italian designers and stoneworkers increasingly explored travertine as both a structural and decorative material. This table captures that approach beautifully: minimal in form, yet rich in natural texture. Its generous scale, expressive grain, and carefully carved stonework give it the distinctive presence that continues to make vintage Italian travertine furniture highly desirable.
