Vintage French Art Deco Leather and Walnut Lounge Chairs, 1940s

Created in France during the 1940s, this exceptional pair of vintage Art Deco lounge chairs pairs sculptural solid wood frames with warm cognac leather, showcasing the bold craftsmanship and expressive forms that defined French seating of the period.

The design is distinguished by its dramatic curved arms, each formed in a continuous sweep that rises from the lower frame and arches around the backrest. Tall, gently reclined backrests give the chairs an elegant profile, while the substantial bases provide a striking counterpoint. Layered wood construction, carved detailing, and elongated feet create a stepped, almost architectural foundation that reflects Art Deco's fascination with rhythm and strong linear decoration.

The solid wood frames have been professionally refinished in a rich dark walnut stain, highlighting the curves and handcrafted details. Newly reupholstered in cognac leather, the generously padded seat cushions and tailored backrests introduce warmth and softness against the darker wood.

What makes this pair particularly compelling is the contrast between the substantial decorative bases and remarkably fluid armrests. Together, they give the chairs a distinctive identity from every angle. With their uncommon construction, rich materials, and beautifully executed woodwork, they represent the expressive side of 1940s French Art Deco and the exceptional level of craftsmanship associated with furniture from the era.
