Mid-Century Paul Evans Cityscape Mirror with Console Table for Directional

An exceptional example from Paul Evans’ celebrated Cityscape collection for Directional, this 1970s mid-century modern chrome console and wall-mounted mirror captures the bold experimentation that made Evans one of the most distinctive figures in American modern design. Part of the PE 200 series, the piece combines furniture, sculpture, and reflective surface into one dramatic design.

The console and mirror frame are wrapped in individually arranged polished chrome panels, forming the signature patchwork pattern associated with the Cityscape series. Panels of different sizes and orientations create a striking interplay of seams, reflections, and light across the surface. The console projects from the tall mirror with a clean floating appearance and can be mounted at the buyer’s preferred height, allowing the configuration to be adjusted for comfort and use. A generously sized pull-out drawer is cleverly concealed within the facade, maintaining the streamlined design while adding practical storage.

Evans became renowned for pushing furniture beyond conventional woodworking, experimenting extensively with metals and highly labor-intensive surface treatments. His work for Directional during the 1960s and 1970s produced some of his most recognizable designs, with the Cityscape series becoming particularly sought after for its unmistakable chrome mosaic construction.

This rare console-and-mirror configuration is signed Paul Evans, further preserving its provenance and authenticity. A remarkable combination of craftsmanship, functionality, and visual impact, it represents one of the most recognizable chapters of Evans’ influential career.
